Having too much tension when you bowl can both lower your score and make injuries more likely. Your thumb in particular should be nice and relaxed. An improper grip can make your delivery tense and strained. Using too much force means you lose control of the ball and where it goes. Lack of control can cause your ball to end up in the gutter.

You can avoid the dreaded ‘gutter balls’ by very gently putting a slight twist on your fingers when you release. This will allow the ball to slightly curve ‘away’ from the gutter. You can ‘steer’ your ball into the pin center by putting some ‘hook’ into it. That’s what you’re doing with the slight finger twist. Be careful! Too much finger twisting will send your ball into the opposite gutter.
